Databricks vs Snowflake

API ACCESS / INTEGRATIONS / DATA CONTROL

Both reviewed routes let customer-authorized applications query granted tables with SQL. Databricks' enabled Delta change data feed and Snowflake's standard table streams offer different recovery contracts. Query access, outbound change capture and moving table records to customer storage are separate decisions.

The practical difference

For Databricks on AWS, validate the selected Delta tables, row identity and retained starting versions. For Snowflake, define standard streams, transactional consumption and independent consumer offsets. Choose against your workload and existing data architecture, then test an interrupted extraction. These findings do not establish a universal performance winner, complete account migration or a like-for-like total price.

This comparison covers customer control over Databricks and Snowflake. The assessment below retains each product, route and source date; product features and native workflows need their own product evaluation.

Scores and assessment scope

These scores use the same customer-control methodology as the vendor reviews. They combine documented capabilities and conditions (unresolved scoring inputs carry an asterisk).

Access and price: credentials need data and compute grants

Databricks customer administrators configure a service principal and OAuth access, then grant warehouse and catalog/table permissions. Snowflake administrators configure a custom OAuth security integration and the roles, objects and warehouse an application may use. In both cases, a token identifies the client without independently granting access to every table.

Budget query compute, retained storage and the extraction destination against the proposed workload. Consumption costs differ from a fixed API access charge. Snowflake’s edition matrix includes the SQL API, table streams and bulk unloading in Standard. Commercial AWS Databricks SQL requires Premium or above; Premium is now the entry paid tier following Standard’s retirement. Complete fixed API fees remain unresolved, and these plan floors cannot support a total-price ranking. Request the applicable commercial terms alongside the granted technical scope.

Queries and writes: operate on the tables you can access

Databricks' Statement Execution API runs SQL on warehouses and returns results in chunks. Snowflake's SQL API submits statements within a database, schema and warehouse context. Both support queries over granted tables, including joins and aggregation. Complete retrieval requires handling result partitions or chunks rather than assuming the first successful response contains every row.

The Databricks review credits the verified INSERT route; Snowflake's review separately cites INSERT and UPDATE. That evidence boundary does not establish that Databricks lacks other DML. For either platform, verify the target table's operation support, privileges, validation and transaction behavior before connecting an application that changes data.

Changes and recovery: retained history needs a consumer contract

For the enabled Delta CDF scope assessed here, Databricks exposes insert, update pre/post-images and delete records with commit metadata. Preserve a stable business key and a successfully applied version. Checkpoints and starting versions support recovery only while the required history remains available; retention and VACUUM can remove it. A fresh stream can start from current table state, which does not recreate lost intermediate changes.

Snowflake standard streams expose actions, update flags and row IDs. A stream stores an offset into source history; selecting it alone does not advance that offset. Transactional consumption advances it, including COPY INTO a location. Separate consumers need separate streams, and stale history needs reconciliation. This scope excludes append-only and external-table streams (their mutation semantics differ).

Exit and workflows: table data is one part of recovery

Databricks SQL results can be retained as structured records. Snowflake COPY INTO a customer-selected cloud location unloads table or query results into portable files. Keep these outbound extraction routes distinct from loading data into either platform. A successful unload does not prove that the destination can reconstruct the full governed workspace or account.

Both platforms support customer-authored functions, but a table export does not include every function, job, grant, policy or credential. The reviews leave native artifact rights and independent execution unresolved. Build a separate restore inventory and check runtime dependencies before treating either dataset copy as a complete exit plan; post-cancellation access also remains unestablished.
