Make vs Zapier

API ACCESS / INTEGRATIONS / DATA CONTROL

Make’s assessed API manages scenarios for accessible teams and organizations. Zapier’s assessed Workflow API lists Zaps for an authorized user through an embedded public integration route. These are different entry points: direct scenario operations and embedded workflow visibility should be compared against the same intended job.

The practical difference

Investigate Make for customer-token scenario management. Investigate Zapier’s reviewed route when your published integration needs to show users their Zaps. For whole-account backup or migration, establish a separate restore contract on both sides (a workflow list is an inventory, not proof of portable execution). This comparison does not rank connector catalogs or automation-builder usability.

This comparison covers customer control over Make and Zapier. The assessment below retains each product, route and source date; product features and native workflows need their own product evaluation.

Scores and assessment scope

These scores use the same customer-control methodology as the vendor reviews. They combine documented capabilities and conditions (unresolved scoring inputs carry an asterisk).

Make

Zapier

The entry gate belongs to the selected API route

Make accepts API tokens with explicit scopes. OAuth is an alternative that requires requesting a client; do not assume the same setup as a customer-generated token. Select the organization or team the integration is intended to manage.

Zapier’s workflow-retrieval guide requires an integration published in its App Directory. That prerequisite belongs to this embedded route; it does not establish a universal approval requirement for every way customers use Zapier. A customer deciding between the products should first check whether this is the API their outside application needs.

Enumerating a workflow differs from operating it

Make documents scenario creation, updates, activation and execution alongside listing. The assessed Zapier route enumerates Zaps; this review does not establish equivalent writes through that route. Other Zapier endpoints need separate operation and entitlement review before drawing a broader conclusion.

Zapier’s zap scope selects workflows using the integration, zap:all broadens to the user’s Zaps, and zap:account:all covers workflows the user can access in the account. Shared workflows also require the matching selection parameter. Preserve those scope choices with an inventory so a short list is not mistaken for a quiet account.

Management API budgets need their own quote

Make publishes organization-plan request limits, including 60 per minute on Core and 120 on Pro. Those are management API limits; they cannot be used as a count of automation runs or connected-app operations. Verify the organization’s returned API allowance for the chosen plan.

The reviewed sources leave complete minimum entitlement and exact route charges unresolved for both products. Price the intended management or embedded route separately from the workflows it exposes. Repeat paginated inventory reads to reconcile current definitions; these assessed lists do not establish retained change replay or complete run-history recovery.

Use a workflow audit to test the scope

For a proposed automation audit, identify the teams, users and shared workflows that must appear, then follow pagination and compare against that manifest. In Zapier, evaluate the required broader scopes before concluding the inventory is complete. In Make, keep the organization/team selection explicit.

Next separate definition metadata from connections, secrets and execution evidence. Retain the permitted output before access ends, but require a demonstrated import and usable execution path before calling it a backup. Native workflow rights and customer cancellation retrieval remain unverified in these reviews.

Before you choose

  • Are we managing customer scenarios or embedding a workflow list in a published integration?
  • Which teams, users and shared workflows must the token expose?
  • Which charges apply to API management and which apply to automation execution?
  • Can the retained artifact be restored with working connections in the target environment?
