The practical difference
Choose the definition-management process your team will maintain: periodic Retool exports or committed Appsmith revisions. Retool findings here apply to Classic Apps (the newer app builder has a separate contract). Both routes preserve application artifacts within their stated scope, while source data and working connections need separate recovery. The scores describe these reviewed routes, not every feature of either builder.
This comparison covers customer control over Retool and Appsmith. The assessment below retains each product, route and source date; product features and native workflows need their own product evaluation.
Scores and assessment scope
These scores use the same customer-control methodology as the vendor reviews. They combine documented capabilities and conditions (unresolved scoring inputs carry an asterisk).

Definition custody: downloaded files or repository commits
Retool Classic Apps export queries, components and modules as JSON or a Toolscript archive. Users download selected apps through the editor or app menu. This manual per-app route provides a file you can retain outside the organization; its scope does not establish that Retool lacks other source-control options.
Appsmith connects application definitions to a customer-selected Git host. Commits give the team revisions outside the instance and a basis for reviewing changes. Choose this route when committed definition history is part of your release process; its value depends on builders actually committing the changes they need to recover.

Permissions and cost: secure the artifact and the connection
Retool organization administrators manage resources and permissions separately from the exported app. Appsmith requires Create permission to connect or disconnect an app from Git, plus an SSH deploy key with repository write access. HTTPS Git connections are unsupported. Confirm that the chosen Git host supports those requirements.
The linked reviews leave minimum commercial entitlement and exact route fees unresolved. Obtain the current terms for your deployment and repository needs before making a price decision. Appsmith’s Git credential and Retool’s resource credentials authorize different systems; retaining one does not preserve access to the other.

Application logic and data actions need different recovery plans
Appsmith supports JavaScript bindings and JS Objects. Retool exports retain queries with the Classic App definition. Those artifacts help preserve authored behavior, but they still rely on the builder runtime and configured resources. Neither reviewed route establishes an external API for writing backing business records.
After a definition change, repeat the Retool export or commit the Appsmith revision. These recovery points cover saved artifacts. They do not capture every end-user action or database mutation, and this comparison does not establish a record-change replay service for either product.

Restore the connections as well as the interface
Retool imports the exported Classic App into a compatible instance, but resources must be created separately in a different organization. Standard exports omit source data. Appsmith Git retains definitions and revisions; recovery still needs compatible Appsmith infrastructure and configured data sources.
Before leaving either builder, restore a representative app with its actual queries and permissions. Check backing-data extraction separately. The reviewed artifacts do not establish independent execution without the vendor runtime, complete organization recovery or retrieval rights after cancellation.

Before you choose
- Are we preserving Retool Classic Apps or evaluating the newer app builder?
- Will the team maintain manual exports or commit every required definition change?
- Can we recreate data-source connections and permissions in a clean instance?
- Which data and runtime dependencies remain outside the saved application?
