CUSTOMER CHOICE
Third-party accessibility
Developers register an OAuth client and customers install it with selected scopes. API terms require Motive’s prior written consent before making an app available to any third party, including private distribution outside its marketplace.
Confirm who can connect, who owns the credentials and which uses are permitted. Customer consent and provider approval can be separate requirements; the selected plan and contract still matter.
READ / INTEGRATE
API and export routes
GET /v1/vehicles supports updated_after and vehicle filters. Traverse page_no/per_page to enumerate the permitted current fleet; the documented maximum is 100 per page. Vehicle tracking metrics require installed and assigned hardware.
| Access route | Authentication | Credential owner | Provider approval | Access requirement | Last checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Approved third-party OAuth application | OAuth 2.0 | Integration provider | Yes | developer client id/secret plus customer installation and vehicles scopes; api terms 2.3 require written consent for any third-party distribution, whether listed or private. customer-only internal use is a different legal scope. | 2026-10-17 |
Availability depends on your product, plan and agreement. See the documentation below for the requirements of each route.
ECONOMIC ACCESS
Cost, authentication and limits
Developer registration alone does not establish production plan entitlement, fixed API charges or partner fees. The API terms reserve transaction limits without a numeric general budget for this vehicle route.
Check API entitlement, credential ownership and rate limits for the route you intend to use. Include review fees, customer-plan upgrades and ongoing access charges in the total.
ACT FROM OUTSIDE
External action
POST /v1/vehicles creates and PUT /v1/vehicles/{id} updates a vehicle. Calls default to the first active fleet administrator unless X-User-Id selects another administrator; a system API user requires support provisioning.
Validate the supported operation, acting identity and permission scope (read access does not imply write permission). Ambiguous retries and revoked credentials also affect whether an external workflow can run safely.
KEEP ACCESS USEFUL
Continuity
Overlap updated_after polls and use vehicle_upserted notifications as hints. V1 webhooks must be acknowledged within three seconds and retry after delays of one minute, one hour and six hours; failed request IDs can also be retried explicitly. Retention and universal vehicle deletion events remain unverified.

Useful ongoing access includes corrections and deletions, not only the first export. A failed request, changed filter or lost resource permission should not be interpreted as a deleted record.
LEAVE WITH YOUR DATA
Data exit and portability
Authorized vehicle JSON can be retained within the permitted application purpose (API terms restrict third-party distribution of User Data and derivative models). A fresh fleet traversal restores current master records, without recovering video, deleted payloads or every earlier change.
Test the output against the destination’s required fields and history. Check stable identifiers, relationships, attachments and extraction time; a sample file proves only the coverage of that sample.
BUILD / INSPECT / REUSE
Business logic and customization
Customers can implement external integrations against fixed endpoints. Native workflow definitions, their ownership and independent execution are not established by the vehicle API.
Custom API access, ownership of workflows and the right to export their definitions are separate questions. A custom-app capability alone does not establish that business rules can move to another system.
